California Off-Road Diesel Equipment Rules

California has rules that apply to most off-road diesel equipment with 25 horsepower or more, including owned, rented, and leased equipment. These rules are designed to reduce air pollution from diesel engines used off the road.

Under these regulations, equipment owners must:

  • Register and label all applicable equipment with the California Air Resources Board (CARB)

  • Limit adding older equipment to their fleet

  • Reduce emissions by upgrading, replacing, or retiring older engines, or by installing approved exhaust filters

  • Limit engine idling and keep a written idling policy

  • Disclose compliance information when selling equipment
